since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;

wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world

my blood approves,
and kisses are a better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. Don't cry
- the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids' flutter which says

we are for each other; then
laugh, leaning back in my arms
for life's not a paragraph

And death i think is no parenthesis

shooting up houses …

I photographed an interior for Whitney Stewart, and I'm proud to announce the project won the Washington Spaces 2009 Design Competition. Whitney is a fantastic designer and she and her associate Jennifer were so much fun to work with. I have to also thank Tricia Joyce for allowing us access to her home and being such a beautiful host.

the last sail

Today two friends and I delivered my boat 40 miles up the brokerage where I originally bought it five years ago. It was a perfect 90-degree day on a glassy bay with light but good winds - amazing conditions that made it harder to let go, but at the same time what better conditions for ending a chapter ...

We ate, drank, lounged like big cats reading (I made a little headway on some Hesse).

I have a lot to describe, But I'll add more later. After a few near sleepless nights of equal parts work, too-deep contemplation/meditation, and run-of-the-mill insomnia starting Thursday night, I can hardly keep my eyes open.

Glenn

The camera comes in tighter as if its a member of the audience who can't stay in the crowd and - drawn by the fascinating grace of his fingers - jumps up to look over his shoulder.

Acknowledgements

I had a lot of time in the car today running between DC and NY, and somewhere between sentimental country radio and BBC world news, my mind drifted to my days in gradschool for science ... what seems a lifetime ago. I wouldn't trade the time and effort for anything, and the acknowledgments section of my thesis explains why:

What goes into a thesis pales compared to what doesn’t … and is nothing without it.

This stack of pages rests on a pedestal not only of background work and experiments both failed and fruitful – but also of constant support by an amazing community. I’d like to thank my extended family for all their love, support and encouragement throughout this process; it’s changed my life in no small way.

As I write this final piece, I have to acknowledge what publications and dissertations never include: For several years the right group collected at the right time. Great work came from the collaboration of talented minds – though more than that, relationships came about. And weddings. And children. Death and heartache. Happiness, friendship and support. In other words: community, and life made rich because of it. I’d like to acknowledge everyone who was a part of this. You will never leave me.

This thesis is simply what happened in the meantime.

Samsara

This past weekend was beautiful weather for the first time this year, so I spent it fixing and scrubbing my boat to get her ready for sale next week in Annapolis. It may have been my last weekend aboard, and it's harder to part with her than I thought. I lived aboard for three of the five years I've owned her, I have so many memories from that time.

Though it's sad, I tell myself there's a beauty to letting go. However, that little space below decks is the only place in the world that's ever been my own. The smell of the cabin and the sound of the water against the hull and the dock lines creaking against the cleats told me not to leave. Compared to it, every other spot in the world seems foreign.

More Stills …

I don't want to tip our hats too much, but I pulled a few more screenshots while going through the"Gypsy Queen" video footage and wanted to share.

Next week the hard drive is shipped off to our editor in London and the countdown begins before I can add the final color palette. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks to Jake and his iphone for these. It's amazing what he captures when nobody's looking.

“Gypsy Queen” Video Stills

The footage is shot and we're in the days-long process of returning the pass van worth of equipment - both rented, begged, and borrowed. But while we're doing that, I wanted to post screenshots of a few of the dailies.

I have a lot of people to thank for making this happen on such a tight budget. First, Jake Pena, for letting us borrow his Canon 5D Mark II to shoot the video - I'm really in his debt for that; Jake Rogers and Mark Gong for a long day of help with grip, capture, and AC; Shanti Carson and Mark Chandler for braving the cold and acting through it all; Robb Scharetg for his beautiful Nikon primes, silks and scrim; Aaron Hunt for his Fresnel lights; Ted at Milk studios for hookin' a brother up; my roommates Ian, Chris, and William for lending their equipment; the guys at Arri CSC for getting us our dolly, track and HMI; Mac and all the guys at FDNY for their willingness to help with the location; finally John for being a producer-turned-gaffer with no complaint.
