The Singing Butler
I've been laying my head a lot of different places lately, and the other morning the first thing I noticed in a new room was this painting. It's a beautiful moment, and though there's something of interest to the surrealism of its inconsistencies, I couldn't get back to sleep due to their distraction ... the way the light falls the wrong way on the subjects (a higher source on the maid's dress and the dancer's arm than on their faces) or how the butler's handkerchief is blowing like mad but his umbrella is at the wrong angle to the wind. It's so idealized, but no less beautiful.
